The
Sands of Pride: A Novel of the Civil War
by William R. Trotter aka PC Gamer's
Desktop General; Hardcover: 640 pages (2002) By the
author of the notable nonfiction trilogy The Civil War in North
Carolina which Charles Frazier acknowledged as source material for
Cold Mountain this all-encompassing roman … clef unfolds as a
quixotic, skirmish-by-skirmish account of the early battles of the
Civil War along North Carolina's labyrinthine coast. Opening on New
Year's Eve 1860, almost six months before North Carolina's grudging
decision to secede from the Union on May 20, 1861, this sprawling
account revolves around the bustling seaport of Wilmington, which
serves as the lifeline of the Confederacy. This masterful epic
offers insight into the perfidious political agendas and personal
greed underlying the bumbling and horrors suffered by both sides
during the war. As it concludes in July 1863, portending the fall of
Fort Fisher some two years later, a sequel seems likely.

War
Beneath the Sea : Submarine Conflict During World War II
-- Peter Padfield; Paperback - 576 pages (March 1998) "Padfield
is an acknowledged war historian and he writes in a very
scientific and analytical way, doing away with the bravado stuff
that merely distorts the picture for readers of later generations.
It has an impressive list of sources and reference literature on
the issue. For serious readers it is a clear "must
consider"!! " - Frank Altenburg, chartered
engineer (electrical engineering)

World
War II: Battle Force - U-Boat
(1998)
-- VHS Video
This documentary opens with the ghostly
image of the battered hull of a U-boat sunk on the
next-to-last day of the war. Awaiting restoration at a
Liverpool dry dock, the battered and rusted sub still evokes
the deadly danger that permeated the minds of sailors for much
of the war. During what German submarine crews called
"The Happy Time," the early war years, the U-boats
attacked mercilessly and with terrifying surprise. The
documentary examines the evolving role of the U-boat in the
war, including innovative design refinements and tactical
deployments.

U-Boat
War Collection Set
(1997) -- VHS Video
"If you are looking for an excellent
all encompassing documentary of the U-boat war in the Atlantic
during WWII you MUST order this 3 tape set. Not only is this
video historically and technically very accurate, but it is
also captivating, almost like a story, rather than a
documentary. In addition, it contains some of the best
interviews with historians and people who actually lived
through this struggle I've ever seen."

Das
Boot - The Director's Cut -- Collectors DVD
This is the restored, 209-minute director's
cut of Wolfgang Petersen's harrowing and claustrophobic U-boat
thriller, which was theatrically rereleased in 1997.
Originally made as a six-hour miniseries, this version devotes
more time to getting to know the crew before they and their
stoic captain (Jürgen Prochnow) get aboard their U-boat and
find themselves stranded at the bottom of the sea. Das Boot
puts you inside that submerged vessel and explores the
physical and emotional tensions of the situation with a vivid,
terrifying realism that few movies can match.

hours $22.49 |
